The PURE Intervention Approach

PURE is a pro-active, unified, responsive, and empowerment approach to family relations. PURE is an intervention treatment plan that incorporates social work, criminal justice, and ABA principles of theory.

The core values of social work include competence, dignity and worth of the person, service, integrity, and social justice, all of which are included in PURE. The deterrence theory, which stems from the criminal justice approach, is both general and specific. PURE focuses on swift, stern, and certain specific deterrence. The word stern specifies that the consequence of poor behavior must be severe enough that it outweighs the pleasure of engaging in negative behavior.

Applied Behavioral Analysis or ABA implements a series of positive and negative reinforcement to encourage positive behavior and deter negative outcomes in the future.

Proactive methods promote thinking in advance and creating a vision and strategy which determine tactics to implement in a time of need. For example, if a caregiver has an issue with a youth watching T.V. past his or her bed time, a proactive method would be to remove the T.V. from the room.

Unified methods promote communication between anyone who is involved in taking care of the youth. For example, caretakers must share the same views on the rules of the home so the youth always knows what is expected of them no matter which parent or guardian is present.

Response methods promote the best response to a negative or positive reaction. For example, instead of the caretaker raising their voice for every negative behavior, the individual will learn how to respond in a manner that defuses a possible volatile situation resulting in an environment where positive communication is first and foremost.

Empowerment encompasses all methods of PURE (proactive, unified, and response) resulting in a sense of accomplishment and confidence for regaining control of the home and family.
